HOW CAN WE GIVE THE ENTIRE COST OF THE BOOK TO RRI?
We have been asked how we are able to donate the entire selling price of our book to Russell Rescue. We were fortunate to have two incredible folks step forward and donate the money for the entire printing of the book so that all our costs have already been paid. There really are ANGELS in this world disguised as people!
This book was assembled by a variety of extremely talented, semi-professional writers with a love of animals in general and Jack Russell Terriers in particular. Three different Jack Russell Terrier Lists came together to see this project fulfilled and it has exceeded all expectations. The reviews have been unanimously good and there have been no dissatisfied customers whatsoever!
From our Foreword by Catherine Romaine Brown (Renowned Author and certified JRTCA Judge)
"Rescue is a human's way of being one in kindness with other living things, animals. For an animal in dire straits, humans are the only chance an animal has of being re-homed and saved. Millions of dogs are 'put to sleep' in shelters every year. Many of them are purebreds and it is no fault of their own. We live in a disposable society where it is easy to discard what is not wanted without a second thought. It is pitiful when humans can discard a pet and relate why to those who care, it is very taxing. A rescuer becomes closer to the the animals in need and furious at the callous humans they are forced to deal with. Most of rescue is due to human problems, not animal problems."

UNSOLICITED REVIEW OF "COLD NOSES, WARM HEARTS, The Animals That Love Us!":
I am the proud owner of two lovely dogs – an aging Jack Russell cross Chihuahua called Katy and a six-month-old Jack Russell puppy called Pixie. They give me plenty of love and affection and my life would be lacking something, without their presence.
So when I saw a book online, which was being sold for Russell Rescue Inc. – the US charity which helps rescue Jack Russell terriers – I thought it looked interesting and a worthwhile charity to support. The book is called Cold Noses Warm Hearts – The Animals That Love Us! It is a collection of true stories and poems written by the pets’ owners.
The book is well made and has a gorgeous front and back cover which features photos of all the pets mentioned inside. Although the majority of pets featured are Jack Russell dogs, there are stories about other breeds of dogs, a cat and a horse.
The book is 111 pages of stories, poems and quotations. The stories range from two pages to ten pages – all of which are ideal for a coffee break read. I began reading this one story at a time, savoring each one, but then read the rest in one sitting.
It is very much a feel-good kind of book. Even when the stories recounted are sad, you can’t help but smile at the picture painted of their pet and how much they loved it and were loved by it. Each page is full of warmth and affection.
There is plenty of humor too, as you read about the antics of hyperactive, mischievous and comical Jack Russells. The story ‘Cpl. J.R. Dugan, USMC Explains It All!’ is especially funny, as the author writes in the words of his pet. This really captures the spirit of the breed, with its energy and enthusiasm for life’s pleasures.
Being in aid of a rescue organization, there are tales of rescuing animals too and rehoming them. The story of a little Jack Russell called Hobbit is told from two viewpoints – that of Betsy Miller and the dog’s eventual owner Janeen Langley. It illustrates how much people will do for animals and how they are rewarded so much in return. Janeen adopted Hobbit (renamed Dixie ) and later went back to the rescue centre to adopt her cage-mate Scruffy, who was missing his little friend.
This book also reminded me how therapeutic it can be to own a pet. The true accounts include several examples of people who were ill, disabled or emotionally fragile and each one was helped by a loving animal coming into their lives. For Debi Cole, it was a horse called Scarlet Nation who enabled her to get out and about again, despite her physical problems.
Barri Sorel writes about how her dog Springboard helped her to see life in a more positive way. Her descriptions of her pet’s antics are very evocative; you can really visualize what happened. Every dog owner will recognize some of the behavior she describes and again, it reinforces the strength pets can give us in difficult times.
There are also stories of a literal underdog who had his day at the races, tributes to beloved pets who are missed and remembered, animals who have had lucky escapes from potential tragedy and a Mexican street dog who provided an invaluable service to a woman called Cuauhcihuatl Vital Garcia.
The most moving stories for me were two by Charles Patrick Dugan, the former US Marine. In one, he tells of his time serving in Vietnam in 1967, when his unit rescued a puppy from death. They adopted him as their mascot and called him Brown Dog. Later on, the dog had a chance to repay those who saved him – and did so with courage and loyalty. A truly amazing story.
The other one by the same author explains how he was at a real low in his life, when a Jack Russell came into his life. Without giving away too much, the dog inspires him to go to Mexico , to help a struggling group of schoolchildren and their teacher. This is a beautiful and heart-warming story that I will remember for a long time.
I personally preferred the stories, but the poems are also worth reading and once again, the love these owners feel for their pets is clear to see. The book concludes with six pages of relevant quotations from various authors, political figures and so on. My favorite of these is this one – “We had to get rid of the kids – one of the dogs was allergic.”
Overall, this is a lovely book and anyone who likes animals will enjoy it and treasure it. It is even better knowing that if you buy a copy, you are helping a worthy cause too. I really recommend you get yourself this book. I am so pleased I did.
